Blue Sky Art Studio Manteo, NC www.theblueskyartstudio.com 252-256-2516 Raku and Alternative Firing Techniques with artist Scott Stockdale This three day workshop will cover a range of different firing techniques using the raku kiln. Participants will learn how to get great results with a variety of alternative firing processes including saggar firing, fuming, horsehair firing, and fusing stained glass into raku glaze. We will discuss how to create super smooth surfaces on your work by burnishing with terra sigillata . These smooth surfaces are responsible for the brightness of colors created during these processes. While the results of atmospheric firings cannot be controlled, we will learn ways of influencing serendipity to achieve successful results . Terra sigillata and glaze recipes will be handed out at the workshop. The last day will be dedicated to fusing stained glass into raku glaze. This exciting process produces intense colors, mixing metal oxides into shinny glass surfaces. Students are encouraged to bring pieces made of the appropriate clay body to be fired. Some shapes work better than others when fusing glass into glaze. Pots will be provided at workshop for those who come without work or need a more appropriate shape. Everyone will leave this workshop with several beautiful, finished pieces. Workshops are to be held at 108 Budleigh in downtown Manteo around the corner from The Tranquil House Inn.
